Lecture/Online Lecture - Photographs of Old Hong Kong and the Tales They Tell: Volume 4 - Mr. David Bellis

  • Auditorium, LT4, Centre for Visual Arts 7A Kennedy Road Mid-Levels, Hong Kong Island Hong Kong SAR China (map)

This is the fourth and latest volume in David Bellis’ series of books, gathering together old photos of Hong Kong and detailing the rich stories which accompany these photos. As with the other entries in this series, David has kindly agreed to give a talk on his new book for the RASHK. His previous talks to RASHK members and many other organisations have been much appreciated and well attended.

This has been booked as an in-person talk at the Centre for Visual Arts – however restrictions may make this impossible. Therefore, this lecture may happen online over a Zoom call instead.

Details (from gwulo.com)

Not your typical photo book!

Revisit old Hong Kong through this book’s collection of rare photos, many of them over 100 years old. Then join the author David to explore the photos’ details, and so discover their hidden stories: the women who toiled up the Peak’s slopes each day, carrying heavy loads of bricks and coal on their shoulders, buried treasure still waiting to be found, Kowloon’s vanishing hills, and many more.

The Speaker

David runs the popular local-history website, Gwulo.com. It hosts over 34,000 pages about old Hong Kong, including over 25,000 photos. In 2014, David won the SCMP's Spirit of Hong Kong award for Heritage Preservation, for his work on Gwulo.com. He has published four collections of old Hong Kong photos and their stories.
