David Bellis takes us on a walk around San Po Kong, introducing its history as we go. He moved to San Po Kong four years ago, and since then he’s been collecting stories of the area.
As you’d guess, Kai Tak and Kowloon City will feature, but there are other curiosities too: traces of pre-British Kowloon, a nullah that needed freshening up, the first Po Kong, a second walled settlement, the British Army’s third contribution to Hong Kong’s well-being, vanishing hills, preserved piers, and more. The topics will be illustrated with old maps and photographs.
Duration: David estimates the walk will last about two hours, but as this is a new walk, the actual length may vary. The route is paved throughout, with a couple of short staircases, but no major climbs.
Restriction: Up to a maximum of 12 attendees.
The walk will be followed by a self-pay lunch in Kowloon City (Planned venue –Pavia Restaurant. Please indicate your dietary requirement with the Administrator.)
Meeting place: Meet in the Kai Tak MTR station concourse, in front of Circle K store near exit A
Admission: RAS members HK$100, non-Members/Guests HK$150
Booking: Please email membership@royalasiaticsociety.org.hk in advance to register your attendance. Numbers are capped for those members wishing to attend this walk. Please also let us know when booking if you plan to stay for our post-walk lunch and dietary requirements.
