This three-photographer exhibition, at The University of Hong Kong Libraries, has memorable photos – of Hong Kong’s natural landscape, Cantonese opera, and local street scenes. The exhibition’s main section, with nature photos by Edward Stokes, is the focus of this curator’s tour.
The exhibition tour will explore the concepts and methods behind photo story telling; Ed’s personal and creative links between Australia and Hong Kong; the framed photo places; and the challenges – and equipment – of film landscape photography. Ed will highlight the need for a ‘seeing eye’, especially today with “easy” digital shooting.
Ed’s Hong Kong photos are exhibited in the context of his previous work in Australia – showing how his photo books there became the springboard for his later work in Hong Kong. Photo storytelling – initially envisaged through maps – is at the heart of the tour.
The journey begins with Hong Kong’s Wild Places, Ed’s highly researched 1995 book on the local landscape and ecology. The acclaim for Wild Places led Ed to exploring, recording, and photographing much more of Hong Kong until 2005 – so creating his nature conservation photos and books exhibited in COLOURS OF HONG KONG.
